Knowledge Acquisition

Expert teachers, with deep knowledge of content and pedagogy, understand the complexity of a subject and know when a practice can or cannot promote student learning. They have cognitive roadmaps that reveal their understanding of the structure of their disciplines; they have knowledge about what to teach; and they know how to teach it.

In designing STAR Tech, we made the assumption that when teachers have more expertise their participation in the STAR Cycle process will be richer. They will be able to notice more when they examine student work, make more insightful interpretations, and offer more productive strategies for instruction and assessment. They will also be at a different starting place when they are receiving personalized and sustained assistance for technology use. When teachers have expertise about scientifically-based strategies, their exploration about how to integrate technology is more likely to begin with a grounding in effective practice.

Teachers today can access information in myriad ways and participate in varied activities to expand their knowledge base. The graphic below captures key strategies:
