Introduction to the Steps for the STAR Cycle

STAR is an acronym for:

S=Set the Context
T=Teamwork
A=Apply Strategies
R=Reflect on Results

Available below are downloadable files (both Word and PDF) with a set of a directions for each step of the STAR Cycle. Each set of directions begins with a brief summary, lists the tools that will be needed by the facilitator and participants, and identifies the steps to be taken. As we describe each step in detail, we indicate who is involved. To make the steps easy to follow and to ensure that you will know exactly who does what, we signal the role of the facilitator, presenting teacher, and team members by varying the typeface as follows:

We have organized the directions to begin with Set the Context and end with Reflect on Results. However, the elements of the STAR create an ongoing cycle. In actuality, after the team’s first meeting of the year, all other meetings begin with Reflect on Results.

On the facilitators' main page, you can access blank versions of all the tools you will need. To provide an example of how the tools can be used, we include with these step-by-step directions "filled out" versions of the tools as they are mentioned in the text.
