Training
Script to Role Play a STAR Cycle Team Meeting
This
script, which can be downloaded at the bottom of this
page, captures what the Looking at Student Work process, the centerpiece
of the STAR Cycle, looks like in action. The script can be used for several
purposes in different settings. For example, it can be used during an
awareness session to help participants understand what occurs during a
STAR Cycle team meeting. A champion can use the script during a facilitators
training session to prepare facilitators for working with teams. Or, facilitators
can use it the first time they meet with their teams to practice carrying
out the Looking at Student Work process.
Format
of the Directions
After an initial
section titled Get Organized, the script is divided into
four sections that follow the four elements of the STAR Cycle:
S = Set
the Context
T = Teamwork
A = Apply Strategies
R = Reflect on Results
Each section begins
with an introduction called "Setting the Stage". The script
has parts for the following team members: a facilitator,
a 6th grade presenting teacher, another 6th grade general education
teacher, a special education teacher, and a technology specialist. It
also includes stage directions. The necessary props
are available below. They include:
- The Looking at
Student Work Protocol
- A blank Looking
at Student Work Record
- A filled out
Set the Context Tool
- The work of three
focal students (a typical student, a student who is struggling, and
a student with a disability)
- A filled out
Reflect on Results Tool
- Pool of Items
for Constructing Rubrics
- The work of the
student with a disability
The script is intentionally
brief to serve as a springboard for discussion or improvisation. We
suggest using the materials in the following ways:
- Have the participants
read the script and review the props silently in preparation for discussing
the following questions: What did the process involve? What were the
roles? How did the team support the presenting teacher? How can this
process work for our team? What modifications do we want to make?
- Have volunteers
take on roles, act out the script, and discuss the script (using the
same questions as above).
- Use the script
as a springboard for discussion.
- Improvise after
looking over the script and props.
You have our permission to make copies of the script and props for your
practice session.
